Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances
Heinz Hall
September 27, 7:30pm
September 29, 2:30pm

JOHN STAFFORD SMITH: The Star Spangled Banner
ARTURO MÁRQUEZ: Danzón No. 2 (PSO Premiere)
MENDELSSOHN: Violin Concerto in E minor for Violin and Orchestra, Opus 64-Liest
RACHMANINOFF: Symphonic Dances

Notes: Symphonic Dances is not so much a collection of dances as it is a series of dramatic tone poems, filled with moodily memorable melodies, eerie waltzes, and a triumphant, virtuosic finale. An audience favorite, violinist Augustin Hadelich reveals “something from a plane beyond ours,” performing Mendelssohn’s wonderfully lyric, virtuosic violin concerto.

♦ CITY THEATRE
POTUS or, behind every great dumbass are seven women trying to keep him alive
Benedum Center
September 21 – October 11  (Times Vary)

Notes: An uproariously funny, feminist satire lands in time for election season! A crude comment, a problematic paramour, and an unfortunate medical mess turn a PR nightmare into a global crisis – and it’s all dumped upon the seven women responsible for keeping the president presidential. This comedy is classified for mature eyes only!

♦ PITTSBURGH SPEAKERS SERIES
♦ Nina Totenberg
Heinz Hall
September 25, 8:00pm

For more than 40 years, Nina Totenberg has covered the inner workings of our nation’s highest court – a tenure longer than any sitting US Supreme Court justice. She shares insightful reporting on all aspects of the Court as National Public Radio’s award-winning legal affairs correspondent. One of the country’s most respected journalists, Totenberg’s reports air regularly on NPR’s critically acclaimed news magazines All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and Weekend Edition.

Referred to as “the crème de la crème” of NPR by Newsweek, Totenberg helps audiences understand the impact of headline-making judicial cases. She shares her seasoned reflections on the Supreme Court, top legal issues affecting everyday Americans, and the important cases being considered by the court. In-depth and wildly thought-provoking, her deep experience and nuanced perspective provides audiences insight into today’s judicial headlines like no one else can.

Totenberg has won every major journalism award in broadcasting and holds the distinction of being the first radio journalist to have won the National Press Foundation’s “Broadcaster of the Year” award. In 2023 she was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame by the Museum of Broadcast Communications. She has been honored seven times by the American Bar Association for continued excellence in legal reporting and has received more than two dozen honorary degrees.

Totenberg has also written for major newspapers and periodicals including The New York Times Magazine, The Harvard Law Review, The Christian Science Monitor and New York Magazine. Esquire magazine twice named her one of the “Women We Love.”

Totenberg’s memoir, Dinners with Ruth: A Memoir on the Power of Friendships, is a tribute and testament to her nearly 50-year friendship with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
